Vienna Christmas Markets

Hey guys!

As the weather gets colder and snow begins to fall, I’m reminded that Christmas is just around the corner. Every year in December, Vienna is full of Christmas Markets and Christmas vibes. It’s chilly and pretty and really great to see! There are lots of Markets all around the city, right up until Christmas Eve and I wanted to talk a little more about them. My recommendations, which markets are my favorites, which are worth visiting and more.

At the Karlskirche lies the Art Advent Christmas Market- this Christmas market is my favourite, which is why I wanted to mention it first! It’s just beautiful. Selling only quality regional products + all of the large variety of Mulled Wines, and Punsch are organically produced. This gets a big thumbs up from me and many people agree that is one of the best Markets in the city. Everything that is sold here is not commercial, very unique and handcrafted unlike a lot of the goods sold at some other Christmas Markets around the city. *If you are after something special and unique, then there is a great chance that you will find it here. Plus, it is just gorgeous! especially when covered in snow.

Another Christmas Market that I like, is this cute little one called the k.u.k. Weihnachtsmarkt on Michaelerplatz. It may be small but it sure is pretty! right in the heart of the city and a short walk to both the Christmas Village on Maria-Theresien-Platz Christmas Market and the Christmas Market on Stephansplatz.

All three Christmas Markets are pretty close together and the walk to each location is lovely- especially at night with all the gorgeous sparkly lights in the first district of Vienna. During the day the Christmas Markets are just as beautiful and in my opinion,  are worth seeing in both daytime and nighttime.

My second favourite and (in my opinion) the most beautiful Christmas Market in all of Vienna is…. *drum roll* The Schonbrunn Christmas Market at the beautiful Palace. The market combined with the beautiful Palace backdrop makes it a stunning location for the Christmas Market. I felt all the vibes here! There are lots of different stalls, as well as Punsch and Mulled Wine stands and a large variety of food stands as well. Some selling traditional Austrian cuisine and others selling popular foods such as crepes and waffles. I’m not going to lie, the Schonbrunn Christmas Market is super touristy and can be crazy on the weekend! so just be aware of that before making plans to visit.

I can 100% vouch for the lemon & sugar Crêpes – they were delish! All around Vienna, when you order a drink (whether that be Punsch, Mulled wine, hot chocolate or alcohol-free Punsch) you pay for the drink and then you have to pay (generally) about 3-4 euros for the cup which you can either keep or return and get your money back. It’s a little deposit for the cup! The price for Punsch or Mulled Wine varies from market to market.

Each Christmas Market has its own opening and closing times, so definitely check on google before heading out into the chilly weather. While some might open as early as 10 am, others open in the late afternoon. However, most markets generally close around 8 or 9 pm around the city. *If you are looking for a Christmas Market that goes later into the night, the Christmas Market at Museumsquartier closes at 11 pm every day.

All of the Vienna Christmas Markets are open right up until Christmas Eve, so rug on up (like seriously rug up with lots of layers because all of these markets that I mentioned are out in the open, freezing air) bring both friends and family, enjoy a yummy Punsch or some chestnuts and feel all the Christmas Vibes.

Until next time,

– CC. xx

P.s While I did talk about a couple of Christmas Markets here, there are still others that I did not mention (that is not because I dislike them or anything like that) I just wanted to talk about my own personal favourites from the ones that I visited this year.
